The Katana is a sharp two-handed Dexterity-based melee weapon.
It is one of the most powerful melee weapons in the game, with a 9 base damage output. However, it is a very slow weapon with 105 attack speed, and a decent hit chance of 70%.
Combat[]
Despite its more sluggish speed, the Katana is one of the best weapons in the game, handedly outclassing other great weapons like the Army Knife and Semi-Auto. It is perhaps most comparable to the Strength-based Fire Axe, another slow yet powerful weapon. However, the Axe has a speed advantage of just 5, while dealing 3 less damage and having 5% lower accuracy, leaving it substantially weaker than the Katana.
It outclasses most of its fellow Dexterity weapons in the Steak Knife, Brick, Rusty Sickle, and Broken Bottle by sizeable margins in combat, as well as most other weapons in the game. The Box Cutter is capable of even higher damage per turn due to its speed, but has a chance to break every combat encounter, unlike the Katana.
Any character can carve a path through enemies with the sword regardless of stats, although those with low Dexterity may find themselves unable to fit in a defensive action each turn. The player may consider buying the Camera for its Flash support action, which acts as a faster Dodge.
The Katana is also the best weapon to use against ghosts via the Sever spiritual action, as it ignores hit chance and speed. Due to this, the devastating 9 damage of the Katana shines through compared to all others.
The Katana can also be sold for a valuable 3 FUNDS, in the rare event that the player has an even superior weapon like the Chainsaw or DIY Flamethrower.
Acquisition[]
The Katana can be a tall task to obtain due to the luck involved. The player first has to enter the Otherworld. This can be done via the Village event 'Illusion Shattered', the School event 'Half Open', or the Mansion event 'Tower Window'. Alternatively, they could get their hands on the one-time use Void spell.
Once the plunge into the Otherworld has been made, the player must randomly get the Bleeding Desert event out of 3 total possible ones.
Next, they have to select the 'enter the destroyed temple' option and pass the Perception check against the Otherworld's -3 penalty to all skill rolls. If they succeed, they will be rewarded with the Katana. If not, another attempt will have to be made.
Trivia[]
- Inspecting the Katana reveals that it has been folded over a million times. This is a reference to a snowclone post on the website 4chan's /tg/ board which claimed katanas should be the most powerful weapon in tabletop roleplaying games because of the craftsmanship of Japanese swordsmiths, who would supposedly fold their steel a million times. In truth, no swordsmith would ever fold steel even close to this many times lest the furnace turn their expensive steel into less durable wrought iron, but this particular katana being an artifact of an Otherworldly civilization might allow it to have been made in such a manner that folding steel over a million times was both possible and beneficial.
