Ithotu-0

Ithotu ( イトツ ) is one of the Old Gods that threaten to destroy Shiokawa, Japan. Its summoning ritual apparently involves placing a stone tablet-like object within a sigil.

Descriptions[]

IthotuSummoning

Pre-playthrough Introduction[]

"The supposed cause of the destruction of the library of Alexandria, a perfect black marble statue has been recently discovered and is currently waiting in the museum of OOO for its premiere."

Ithotu's Old God Selection Screen text is the same as listed above.

Pantheon[]

"A perfect black marble statue of a handsome young man is hiding the pure essence of chaos and destruction. The DEVOURING FIRE is the supposed cause of destruction of the library of Alexandria."

Appearance[]

IthotuIntro

Ithotu is described on multiple occasions as a statue composed of "perfect black marble"; this is reflected in its appearance as, in all images, it appears as a charred, black humanoid figure. Ithotu is commonly depicted surrounded by an aura of fire, though this is not always the case. Judging by its bad ending, Ithotu is most likely not entirely composed of marble, and appears to contain some sort of black, tentacled entity.

Old God's Rule[]

ENTROPY: Both you and all enemies deal extra combat damage.

Bad Ending[]

Ithotu ending

During any playthrough in which Ithotu is the Old God threatening to destroy Shiokawa, if your DOOM reaches 100%, you will be shown a special bad ending.

"You're too late! When you arrive to the museum, the fire fighters are already struggling to contain the spreading fire! You manage to slip through the police and run inside...

You make your way inside the exhibition hall as your skin gets charred. The last thing you see is ITHOTU, finally breaking free from its marble casket..."

In the final log entries following this ending, the player's cause of death is listed as "Perished in the hecatomb".

Trivia and Theories[]

  • The appearance of Ithotu resembles a flaming charred man. There are two possible connections to Lovecraftian lore from this alone:
    • Nyarlathotep, the dark-skinned agent of Azathoth, also known as the crawling chaos. [1]
    • Cthugha, the giant ball of flame. [2]
  • In Ancient Greece, a 'hecatomb' was traditionally the mass sacrifice of 100 cattle. During Ancient Greek and Roman sacrifices, parts of the animal would be burnt in honor of the gods. This could imply that when Ithotu awakens, he feeds on 100 people, consuming them by immolation.
  • This may have been originally planned as a Background. [3]
