The Heavy Duty Flashlight is both an equippable weapon and a light source in World of Horror that can be unlocked by completing the Lightburn achievement for equipping the Torch and Flashlight at the same time.
The Heavy Duty Flashlight is heavy and sturdy enough to be used as a blunt melee weapon with a decent 4 damage, a swing speed of 85, and an unexceptional 70% hit chance.
It pulls double duty as a light source for events which require one.
Combat[]
The Heavy Duty Flashlight is a weapon of average stats, which in turn translates to rather average effectiveness in combat. Only characters with medium to good Knowledge will be able to use it well.
It is comparable to the Baseball Bat and its fellow Hardware Store weapon, the Carpenter Hammer. However it clearly outperforms other below average choices like the Meat Cleaver and Crowbar, which it acts as a direct upgrade to.
Compared to other Knowledge weapons, the Heavy Duty Flashlight tends to lag behind the formidable Small Candle and even the Ritual Dagger. However, the latter two may be much more difficult to obtain from the Occult Shop's massive pool of wares compared to the Heavy Duty Flashlight.
When pitted against the other weapon-light source in the game, the Torch, the Heavy Duty Flashlight acts as a direct upgrade, having the same damage and accuracy but being 10 attack speed faster. It is also more easily obtainable than the Torch.
Although it has only so-so combat ability, the Heavy Duty Flashlight comes with a myriad of other benefits. While the 3 FUNDS price tag seems a tad high, its double status as a weapon and light source means it saves the player 2 FUNDS and at least 4% Doom from having to go shopping for the regular Flashlight after buying a weapon.
Furthermore, the Heavy Duty Flashlight comes with the most uses in Events out of any weapon in the game. Being a light source, it can be used in Moving Company for a free item, Strange Markings for a free spell, The Dark Workshed for an unfuelled Chainsaw, and Veil of Darkness to avoid a -3 Reason penalty. It also has use in Horrible History of Household Hell, being needed for Endings A and B.
As a final benefit, if the player has gotten a better weapon and another light source, they can throw the Heavy Duty Flashlight for an impressive 6 damage.
Overall, the Heavy Duty Flashlight is an average combat weapon that saves on Doom and money while providing many benefits in events, and thus is a good choice for a Knowledge character to pick up.
Acquisition[]
After unlocking, the Heavy Duty Flashlight can be purchased from the Hardware Store for 3 FUNDS.
Uses[]
As a light source, the Heavy Duty Flashlight works in all events requiring one:
- In Moving Company, it unlocks the 'search his flat with your flashlight' option, granting a free item alongside 10 EXP.
- It allows the player to select 'use your flashlight' in Strange Markings, granting a free Spell.
- Encountering The Dark Workshed in Perilous Parable of the Peculiar Painting will show the option 'use your own light source', allowing the player character to get their hands on a Chainsaw (No Fuel).
- Lastly, the player can choose to 'light your way' in the Lighthouse's Veil of Darkness event, avoiding a -3 Reason hit while gaining 10 EXP.
It can also be used in Horrible History of Household Hell's Underground Chamber, allowing to player to explore the Cavern Depths after selecting 'explore some more'. This is necessary for obtaining Endings A and B.
Trivia[]
- The Heavy Duty Flashlight can neither be inspected nor has flavour text in its item description.
