Haru is a character that relies on Cigarettes to function in combat, due to starting with the Nicotine Withdrawal and Hard-Knock statuses. Haru gets boosts to his attack speed and damage so long as he is smoking, though this requires planning around when it's expected to have multiple fights or a boss as Cigarettes are expensive without Haru's Irezumi perk and aren't guaranteed to appear in the Shop, Illegal Den; while at Vending Machine they're always available. If you're starved for FNDs to buy more Cigarettes, consider exchanging Experience for Funds at Police Station or visit the Witch's Tree if you have it unlocked.
Haru starts with an extremely high strength stat, making an initial mystery that grants a strength-based weapon highly valuable. Spine-Chilling Story of School Scissors can give Haru a free Wooden Bat, while Vicious Verses of A Violent Vigil has a guaranteed Meat Cleaver in the Storage Room. Otherwise, purchasing a weapon from the Hardware Store early on may help, as most weapons sold there use the strength stat but are typically expensive. Haru's Nicotine Rush and Hard-Knock making him a good character who can rely on Kicks only, saving the money that would otherwise be spent on buying a Weapon.
Haru's character perks are extremely useful for shops and combat. Irezumi and Yakuza Card reduce prices and give most shops an additional item to sell, respectively, while CQC Training allows more effective melee combat with firearms (especially his signature Semi-Auto) and Core Strength is an unconditional +1 damage upgrade.
