Experience or EXP is a gameplay mechanic that allows your character to grow stronger as they advance through mysteries. There are various ways to gain experience, with primary sources being combat and some events, as well as with certain items and through investigating locations and completing mysteries.

Experience can also serve as a currency:

  • It can be used at the Police Station to trade for Funds, at a rate of [15 EXP -> 1 FND]
  • Experience can be similarly used in the Struggling Artist event at a rate of [20 EXP -> 2 FND]
  • It can be used to lower the Charisma check for recruiting Students for 5 EXP
  • There is a battle action "Combat Skill" that rises hit chance for whole fight for 5 experience
  • Memory Extract spell also uses EXP as a fuel

Levels[]

Once you reach at least 100 experience (or at least 140 in the case of Yashiro Kawaji) you have the option to level up. Leveling up allows you to select one perk from three, as well as a choice to increase a stat or restore your Stamina / Reason. You are allowed to reroll the perk selection at the cost of 4% Doom, and must pick both a perk and a stat before continuing. Note that once you enter the level up screen that you cannot go back to normal gameplay until you have finalized your level up.

Your hit chance for weapon attacks also increases with leveling up.

Tips[]

  • Compass is good. +2 exp every time you investigate stuff worth its money.
  • Deduction perk turns your 30 EXP upon solving the mystery into 50 EXP. You can grab it if it's on your first level up (relevant to Kouji but not so much with "use all unlocked perk cards" option).
  • Occult Signs gives you 5-8 experience per cast. Fast Learner gives you a little exp if you got hit in combat. Both perks not really worth it.
  • Healing at hospital sometimes can give you 20 exp (check Status menu for Discharge papers).
  • Listening to Doll Nurse (special action) can give you EXP and Spells in exchange for Doom. It's bad.
  • Spending EXP on students is actually worth its "money." +1 stat basically worth 50 exp (and scaring them costs 5), so hire (check & discharge) students to the limit. Parting Gift will significantly buff you (if stats didn't changed it was Luck buff).
  • Hit chance depends on your level only for your weak and strong weapon attacks (not kicking and shooting).
