Eerie Episode of Evolving Eels is a playable mystery that can be carried out in order to bring the player closer to defeating the Old God of their playthrough. Upon selecting this mystery, your neighbor KANA will join your party as an ally.
Introduction[]
"While returning to your home, someone suddenly bumps into you... 'Did you know...' You turn around. It's your friend living in the same apartment complex, KANA. '..that weird dude is back - you know, the one who studies fish?'
"You shrug, opening the door. KANA follows and immediately enters the kitchen. A while later they return with two cans of soda. 'Aren't you curious, what weird fish did he bring this time?' they grin"
Side Quest: Ichthyology[]
"Investigate the SEASIDE location twice to complete this quest. (0/2)"
You will only investigate the Seaside once during the course of the mystery, so you will need to visit it another time by yourself to complete the side quest, which will award you with the "[THOROUGH INVESTIGATION]" reward and 15 EXP at the end of the mystery. However, besides this post-mystery reward, there seems to be no other benefit or change to the story from completing this side quest.

- "KANA: I saw the creepy neighbor carrying some jars inside his apartment. I wonder... what weird fish did he bring this time? Will you check it out? He will _surely_ recognize me, if I try to do it myself... please?" (Investigate APARTMENTS)
- "KANA: Dude's working at school right? We could break into his office! What do you mean, 'we shouldn't'? It must be empty, because he just came back, and his classes begin next week!" (Investigate SCHOOL)
- "The neighbor's office at school was empty. You did find a few jars, all filled with weird eel-like fish. Despite your protests, Kana decides to take one jar home..."
- "KANA: Have you ever seen an eel like this? It's so freaky! Don't you have a feeling, it's watching us? (How can they sip their soda so calmly, staring at this creepy creature?)" (Investigate APARTMENTS)
- "KANA: I've seen him burning some notes behind our apartment building. Let's go and check it out! (Is this eel even alive?...)" (Investigate APARTMENTS)
- "Kana was right, someone tried to burn some papers. They must've been in a hurry because some of the papers look salvageable. You both return to your apartment and try to decipher the notes..." (BURNT NOTES will enter your inventory.)
- "KANA: That's so weird... your neighbor was really into eels, it seems... (You begin to wonder if spying on your neighbor was a good idea to begin with...)" (Investigate APARTMENTS)
- "KANA: There must be something more we can learn. I'll try to break into his apartment tomorrow morning. I wonder what he's hiding in there?... (You shrug noncommittally. You just wish, you could throw this damned jar into trash.)" (Investigate SEASIDE)
- "Thinking about how stupid it is of KANA to try and break into your neighbor's apartment, you go to sleep..."
- "(You spend an entire day waiting for KANA. Where the hell are they??)" (Investigate SCHOOL)
- "(KANA has been missing since yesterday, you decide to check out the neighbor's apartment yourself.)" (Investigate Target Location: NEIGHBOR'S APARTMENT)

You will start in your Neighbor's Kitchen.
Neighbor's Kitchen[]
"You cautiously enter your neighbor's kitchen. You are shocked to see countless jars filled with eels, flailing around restlessly. Where the hell is KANA?"
Available Options:
- check the bathroom
- check the bedroom
- ESCAPE!
The ESCAPE! option is only available in Neighbor's Kitchen. Selecting this option will immediately end the mystery, and you will be shown Ending C.
Neighbor's Bathroom[]
"A swollen body of your neighbor is rotting away inside putrid murky water. Both his eyes are missing with countless tiny blood trails leading from them in all directions. (-1 REASON / -1 STAMINA)"

- return to kitchen
- check bedroom
Neighbor's Bedroom[]
"You finally find KANA... 'I-I found the neighbor b-but when his eye burst I slipped on the blood and lost consciousness... I'm afraid there's something in my eye now too!.."
Available options:
- check the bathroom
- return to kitchen
- we must go to a hospital!
- Immediately triggers the "OPHTHALMOLOGY (I)" event.
- we must puncture their eye now! (-3 REASON)

You will be shown an event where your mouse is controlling your hand, which is holding a needle. You must then click on Kana's twitching eye.
"Shocked, you see countless tiny eels crawling out of your friend's eye in all directions! Will they even survive the blood loss?!"
You will then be shown the "OPHTHALMOLOGY (I)" event.
Ophthalmology (I)[]
"You rush to the hospital with KANA, getting a lot of attention from horrified people. Your friend is taken immediately to the operating theater and you collapse on a chair in the waiting area..."
Available option:
- Fall Asleep
If you punctured Kana's eye, you will be shown the "OPHTHALMOLOGY (II) event. If you simply took them to the hospital, you will be shown the "OPHTHALMOLOGY (III)" event.
Ophthalmology (II)[]
"'Wake up, dude. You've been sleeping for over 3 hours!' You groggily open your eyes to see your friend KANA. They're wearing an eye patch. 'Not so pretty anymore, eh? I couldn't exactly tell the doctors the truth about what happened and I'm pretty sure I won't be winking with my left eye anytime soon...
"...but thank you for saving my life."

You will then be shown Ending A.
Ophthalmology (III)[]
"When you wake up, it's already night. Trying to ask about your friend, you are met with weird reactions. As if they never existed... You rush to the operating theater yourself but are stopped by armed policemen! Whatever happened, the doctors must've been too late to help..."

- Continue
You will then be shown Ending B.
Endings[]
Ending A: Eye Surgery[]
"You still process the events of a previous night. Corpse-eating eels that lay their eggs in eyes? Sitting with your friend KANA before your apartment building you watch the police officers emptying your neighbor's place."
This ending is achieved by taking KANA to the hospital after puncturing their eye. Unlike Ending B and C, completion of Ending A will allow you to keep KANA as an ally for the remainder of the playthrough.
Ending B: Missing Friend[]
"You still process the events of a previous night. Corpse-eating eels that lay their eggs in eyes? Sitting before your apartment building you watch the police officers emptying your neighbor's place. You wonder if you will ever hear from your friend again.
This ending is achieved by taking KANA to the hospital without puncturing their eye.
Ending C: Left Behind[]
"You run like a coward from your neighbor's place. The next morning, police officers are emptying your neighbor's place. They didn't find KANA. Will you ever hear from your friend again?"
This bonus ending is achieved by selecting "ESCAPE!" from Neighbor's Kitchen. Ending C will be shown regardless of whether or not you check the bedroom and/or bathroom.

- Ichthyology, the name of the side quest, refers to the branch of zoology dealing with fishes.
- Ophthalmology, the name of the ending events, refers to the branch of medicine dealing with the study and treatment of disorders and diseases of the eye.
